Food Safety and Sanitation: Organizations

  • Interstate Shellfish Sanitation Conference http://www.issc.org/EDU/Front.htm Purpose of this organization is to promote shellfish sanitation through government, industry, and academia. This “Shellfish Education” website includes information on safe storage, handling, and preparation of shellfish.
  • National Restaurant Association - Servsafe http://www.restaurant.org/foodsafety/ Link to ServSafe Food safety training program, an electronic newsletter, and food safety and nutrition news and articles.
  • Fightbac Partnership for Food Safety Education http://www.fightbac.org Purpose of the website is to educate the public about safe food handling to help reduce foodborne illness. Site is appropriate for consumers, professionals, educators, and the media. Includes brochures and clip art images that can be downloaded at no cost. May be useful for staff training.
  • Home Food Safety – It’s In Your Hands http://www.homefoodsafety.org A joint site sponsored by the American Dietetic Association and ConAgra, created as a public awareness tool. Text is also available in Spanish. May be useful for staff training due to it’s interactive kitchen quiz, on-line video clips, and educational handouts. Free e-mail subscription is available on home food safety topics.
  • Iowa State University Cooperative Extension Service http://www.extension.iastate.edu/foodsafety A great resource for developing food safety lessons, including educational materials that provide tools needed to minimize risk of foodborne illness. Also includes information on topics such as irradiation and BSE (“mad cow”).
